Yoga is not competitive, you just try your best. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young, stiff or bendy! You just come to class with an open mind and have a go.
Iyengar yoga is the name we give to the method of yoga we practice. It is named after BKS Iyengar
The beauty of the Iyengar method is that we value alignment, precision and correct extension. So that you achieve the pose safely within the limits of any restrictions/injuries you may have.
The study of alignment, precision, extension and the breath brings your mind to a quiet state. Definitely something not to be missed! Sometimes this quietness sneaks up on you and you don’t realise it is happening. Your family does though! Eventually so do you.
We also study Pranyama, breath work. This is the link from the outside world to our own inside world. We have to have a strong steady body to be able to concentrate on the breath so the yoga poses are very important for pranayama
The Iyengar Certification Mark
Iyengar Yoga Teachers go through a very rigorous assessment process and have to maintain their studies every year to qualify for the Certification Mark. When you see the certification Mark accompanying a teachers name you know they are properly qualified in the Iyengar method.
I am fully qualified and insured and hold a current Certification Mark.

BKS Iyengar
B.K.S. Iyengar was born on December 14th 1918 in Karnataka, India. As a youngster, he was in poor health and was introduced to yoga by his brother-in-law, T.Krishnamacharya. He started teaching in 1936. He was introduced to the west in 1954 by the violinist Yehudi Menuhin. He then became known worldwide with the publication of his book ‘Light on Yoga‘ in 1966.
B.K.S. Iyengar is considered by many to be the world’s foremost exponent of yoga, having devoted his entire lifetime to its study, with many publications on the different aspects of yoga to his name.
He didn’t keep yoga a secret as was the tradition amongst yogis then. He fervently believed yoga was for everyone. Amazingly he saw the spread of yoga all over the world in his own lifetime. BKS Iyengar continued to practise right up to the day he died in August 2014 at the age of 95.
In December 2015, on BKS Iyengar’s birthday, Google featured him as the Google Doodle on their home page.
The Iyengar system places great emphasis on body alignment and precision. It is “mediation in action” to quote BKS Iyengar.
He is famous for his therapeutic yoga work and this great attention to detail helps to heal those with health issues.
